Abstract
The international community responded to the issue of climate change by issuing the Carbon Neutral Declaration at the 2017 summit in Paris. This declaration calls for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by participating countries to a net-zero level by 2050, and in October 2020, Japan also declared its commitment to this goal. Although there are high expectations for biomass research as a technology for de-global warming, it is difficult to build a sustainable business based solely on its CO2 reduction effect and economic efficiency.
In response to these issues, our previous studies have shown that the establishment of a regional eco-system and the creation of various regional values are important to promote the utilization of biomass. In this report, we focus on a program of research projects that review biomass utilization centered on rice cultivation, which is the core of Japan's traditional agriculture, from this perspective, and attempt to construct a logic model for biomass utilization research that can be seen from the program. In addition, we will analyze the value creation of biomass utilization in light of the significant changes in values due to climate change, the intensification of disasters, and international conflicts.
