The Maṇi bka’-’bum is a gter ma (hidden treasure) text ascribed to the Dharma-protecting King Srong-btsan sgam-po, who is believed to be an incarnation of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in Tibet. It is thought to have been written by “treasure-discovers” in the 12–13th centuries. The collection is divided into three sections: the Sūtra section (mdo skor), the Sādhana (visualization) section (sgrub skor) and a section containing instructions (zhal gdams skor).

This paper focuses on a “Sādhana composed by the King Srong-btsan sgam-po,” which is included in the section containing instructions. This Sādhana describes the four-armed Ṣaḍakṣarī Avalokiteśvara, who represents the six-syllable formula Oṃ Maṇipadme Hūṃ. We compared this Sādhana with the descriptions of Ṣaḍakṣarī Avalokiteśvara in the Sādhanamālā and the Ṣaḍakṣarīmahāvidyā-maṇḍala in the Kāraṇḍavyūha-sūtra regarding the aspects of iconography and methods of practice in the Sādhana.

We came to the following conclusions: in terms of iconography, this Sādhana is based on the Sādhanamālā and the Kāraṇḍavyūha-sūtra; however, it also incorporates the five Buddhas of Esoteric Buddhism, and so on. Furthermore, in terms of practice, it introduces a method to describe the Maṇḍala of Ṣaḍakṣarī Avalokiteśvara, the preparation of the Sādhana, and devotion to the threefold body of the Buddha (Dharmakāya, Saṃbhogakāya, and Nirmāṇakāya).
