This paper proposes a health monitoring system for concrete pillars using an acceleration pickup. The sensor observes the stationary waves inside the pillars depending on their lengths, which are generated by giving a shock on the head of the pillars. The method identifies the length to the reflection point in the pillar by modeling the sensor output as an output of a linear dynamic system with an unknown parameter and then applying a maximum likelihood method. Experiments show that an accurate health monitoring is realized by measuring the length to the reflection point of the pillar.
