Abstract

We have already proposed a six-phase pole change induction motor (a six-phase PCIM) for electric vehicles (EVs), and studied its operating principle, steady state and transient characteristics. As the results, it was clarified that the constant power operation range of the six-phase PCIM could be expanded using the pole change technique without mechanical contactors; therefore it possesses superb characteristics for miniaturizing EV driving systems. And, we have also proposed a new analysis method derived from a basic equation for the six-phase PCIM. This analysis method can be used to analyze the voltage, the current and the torque characteristics in the transient state as well as in the steady state of the six-phase PCIM.
In this paper, it is clarified that the smooth pole change operation of the six-phase PCIM is possible under some conditions. And the close agreement between measured and simulated results of the pole change operation of the six-phase PCIM driven by a six-phase INV is obtained. Also, it is found that the six-phase PCIM driven by the six-phase INV can operate the smooth pole change operation. As the results, the characteristics at the pole change operation of the six-phase PCIM are clarified. And, it is shown that six-phase PCIM has very high practicability.
