The penetration of variable renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic and wind power generation is increasing rapidly, and the balancing market is going to be established in Japan in 2021. Because both of these events affect power supply-demand balance and frequency control, the simulation technologies of power supply-demand balance and frequency control are becoming more important to investigate the technical challenges and the solutions. Hence in this paper, the trends of these technologies are reviewed.
