The relation between casting weight, Gate area and the casting speed was studied with more than hundred castings of copper and aluminum alloys. The results are classified by the types of castings and alloys into following 8 groupes : For copper alloy sand castings, gun metal, leaded bronze, phosphor bronze and yellow brass, for aluminum alloy sand castings, Silumin γ, and Lautal, and for aluminum permanent mould castings, Silumin γ, and Lautal, and for automotive pistons Lo-Ex and Y alloy.
The obtained results are shown in Fig. 1∼8, and the experimental formula is summarized in Table 15.
Though casting speed is varied by the type of catings, the composition of alloys and other casting conditions, the relation between gate area, casting speed and casting weight can be roughly represented by logarithmic curve.
From this formula one can obtain the adequate casting speed and gate area by calculation of casting weight.
