A series of experiments were performed to study how the chill effect could be reduced in casting of cast iron in metal mold. The wall thickness of the mold had large effect upon it particularly when a test casting of 30φ x 150mm was cast in a metal mold of 10mm wall thickness. The chilling could be prevented by refractory coating of high heat insulating quality. When graphite was used as coating material for a metal mold of thicker wall thickness, there often occured inversed segregation in castngs. Further, the time of stripping the products out of mold had remarkable influence upon the properties of them. Particularly, since the hardness of castings made in metal mold was influenced remarkably by the manner after stripping, it was the most preferable to cool the castings in ashes.
