There are a number of factors having influence upon hot tearing in white cast iron, namely chemical composition of cast iron, melting and pourig temperature or sand molding conditions. In the present report the author relates to how the hot tearing were influenced by molding materials, moisture content, mold hardness and pouring temperature. For this purpose specimens of five different types named A, B, C, D and E were used and the results obtained are summarized as follows:
  1) In the specimens of C and D hot tearieg decreased with increasing the content of bentonite in molding sand.
  2) In the specimens of C and D hot tearing increased with increasing the content of coal-dust in molding sand. In contrast to these specimens there was found a maximum tendency to hot tearing in the specimen of B when the content of coal-dust was at 3.5%.
  3) Hot tearing increased with increasing mold hardness, though there were a few exceptions.
  4) Hot tearing mostly incresed with increasing pouring temperature, though there were found a few reverse cases.
  5) The specimens of B cast in shell mold were almost free from hot tearing independently carbon content, silicon content and pouring temperature.
