A mold filling simulation system for the prediction of defects in die castings is developed. Extended Simplified Marker And Cell (SMAC) method is employed to simulate almost three dimensional transient incompressible viscous flow in a mold cavity. For the prediction of cold shut defects formation in die castings, we proposed Front Marker Tracing (FMT) method. FMT method uses markers which are located at the front portion of fluid in the calculation by the extended SMAC method to trace the portion of fluid front. Simulated results by the system were examined and compared with the results of aluminum die casting and water modeling experiments in the literatures. There are close correlations between the simulated results and die casting and water modeling results.
