The histological studies were carried out on one hundred cases of pulmonary tuberculosis which had been treated surgically during the period from January 1959 to July 1950 at the Toneyama Byoin National Sanatorium.
The obtained results were summarized as follows:
1) Only three cases had normal appearance in the end of bronchi on microscopic examination, and pathological findings were detected in 97 cases.
2) Pathological findings of the walls of bronchi consisted of 74 cases of cell infiltration, 73 cases of irregularity in type of epithelium, 49 cases of tubercle formation, 38 cases of fibrin degeneration, 7 cases of ulcer formation and 3 cases of bleeding or congestion of the regional vessels.
3) Out of three cases which had bronchial fistulas during more than one year after the operation, only in one cases tuberculous appearance at the end of bronchi was observed, and not observed in another two cases.
From these findings in the present studies, it was concluded that the formation of bronchial fistulas after pulmonary resection was not always effected by the tuberculous changes on the end of bronchi of resected lungs.
