Forty hospitalized psychotic patients including 19 men and 21 women, ranged 17 to 44 years old were examined during ECT. The femoral pulse waves were recorded before, during and after, ECT by sphygmograph.
Immediately after electric stimulation, severe bradycardia or cardiac arrest and hypotension occurred about 5 to 10 seconds, then gradually changed into tachycardia and hypertension with duration of 3 to 5 minutes. The cardiovascular changes during forehead application were severe than the auricul. In the repeated cases, the most severe changes appeared during the first shock, and the changes became weaker following the repetetion wof shock. Premedication of 1mg of atropin sulfate eliminated bradycardia and hypotension following the stimulation.
After 1 minute of shock the arterial blood gas showed decrease in pH and Pot and increase in Pco2, and after 3 minutes immediate recovery both in Pot and Pco2 with the exception of pH, which was recovered slowly. Serum potassium increased 1 minute after the shock, and returned to control after 3 minutes. These changes in arterial blood were prevented by artificial respiration.
