In compliance with the needs of the times, blood component transfusion has made rapid advances and has been used quite extensively as a standard form of transfusion therapy. This has been brought about by the rapid advances in immunology and the introduction of recent improvements in the development of blood cell separators.
The indications for the use of whole blood has been decreasing recently. In this symposium a broad range of subjects will be discussed by 7 speakers on erythrocyte transfusion in internal medicine and surgery, indications for platelet transfusion and its preservation, plasma exchange and adverse effects such as antibodies against blood cells and hepatitis due to blood component transfusion. Also, the merits of these new procedures, problems that need to be resolved, and safety measures concerning blood donors will be discussed from a broad angle. In some sections it appears that blood component transfusion is being overestimated, and this needs a more careful approach.
As this symposium being a turning point, the proper way of blood component transfusion will become clear and this modern method of blood transfusion will be treated as the main stem of therapy. However, some of the major problems of component therapy are maintenance of the proper equipments and expansion and organization of the staff of the transfusion department. Transfusion is so closely associated with many other depart-ments that a more refined transfusion method will become the principal theme in the future. Our hopes for a better understanding and decisive judgement on the part of the adminis-tration will also be very great.
