Abstract
The role of international volunteers has changed dramatically in recent years. Although Sherraden et al. (2008) provided a research review on international volunteering published up to 2008, no research reviews have been conducted since then. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to organize the studies that have been published since 2008 and describe the results of international volunteer activities, thus shedding light on future challenges and perspectives on research in this field. The conceptual model proposed by Sherraden et al. (2008) was used as the framework in the analysis. This model organizes the outcomes of international volunteer activities based on the perspectives of “host community”, “volunteer”, and “sending community”. A total of 23 articles were analyzed, and the results were systematically organized and examined to achieve the objectives. As a result, the following three points were identified: (1) more case studies are needed to examine the outcomes on the host community; (2) research on the outcomes for volunteers should focus on the transformation of volunteers’ beliefs and identities; and (3) research on the outcomes for the sending community should be conducted to clarify the relationship between the outcomes on volunteers and this perspective. In contrast, the limitation of this study is that it did not analyze articles written in languages other than Japanese and English.
