A HDTV codec for CS transmission systems has been developed. Using MPEG2,it compresses HDTV images into about 45-Mbit/s with no degradation. Previously, we had been using optical fiber cable to transmit HDTV program materials over a long distance. Using the codec and a CS (Communication Satellite) transmission system or a microwave link, we have realized program transmission from field broadcasting points.
