A back modulation-type flat CRT is developed. Using this device, it is possible to construct a large-area full-color flat CRT (30-50 inches in diagonal length for NTSC-TV and HDTV). This paper describes the charge up influence from support vanes, a circuit that can be used in a color image driver, displayed color image, and how vertical resolution and brightness can be improved. To reduce the charge-up influence from support vanes, highly-resistant materials were used to coat the Al2O3 vanes. A multiplexing circuit for R·G·B signals was fabricated to display the color image, and we displayed the color image 1 inch in diagonal length. Vertical resolution and brightness were improved significantly by using a new vertical addressing method. This study confirms the effectiveness of using back modulation type flat CRTs in televisions.
