Being established in 1995, a M.A. Program of Interpreting Studies, the Graduate School of Economics, Daito Bunka University (Daito Program) is the first graduate program of interpreting in the country. About forty percent of its graduates are now professional interpreters, which is an encouraging and promising result that is worthwhile to examine.
This article aims at revealing what has brought the program to the success, focusing on those graduates’ response to the unique features of Daito Program.
They have greatly appreciated a lot of opportunities for theory-based interpreting practicum and different chances for on-the-job-training in this program. They have also valued their learning of economics that they acquired through Daito Program, as noting its indispensability for professional interpreters.
This article forms a sequel to a paper by Masaomi Kondo (the founder of Daito Program) about the philosophy, design, and practice of the program, a paper published in this issue of Interpreting and Translation Studies.
