Today translation practices in the mass media lie at the heart of the circulation of news and play an ever more important role in a rapidly globalized world. At the same time, media translation is faced with such challenges as the imbalance of power and the asymmetric flow of information associated with globalization. Studies in this filed, however, have not shown substantial progress compared to other areas, such as the studies of literary translations. This is mainly because even within the domain of translation studies, media translation has been considered an objective and neutral activity where equivalence of meaning is easily achieved between the two languages. Aiming to reconsider the relationship between globalization and media translation, this paper articulates major issues regarding this field of study and raises the possibility of applying the theoretical framework of semiotic anthropology to the relevant issues.
