Preparations have begun in earnest for ISO26000, which goes into effect in fall of 2010. For organizations pursuing nuclear energy operations as well, the fundamental approach to complying with this ISO standard is an important matter to consider. In the 21st century COE program of Tokyo Institute of Technology, "Innovative Nuclear Energy Systems for Sustainable Development of the World" (COE-INES) as well, efforts to accomplish the tasks described below are being made in advance of the above ISO standard taking effect. This report discusses the formulation of a Social Responsibility Initiative (SR Initiative) with regard to the Nuclear Social Responsibility (NSR) involved in the nuclear energy operations of COE-INES. Drawing upon research activities up to the present, the SR Initiative gives the philosophy and a charter of conduct carrying out social responsibilities. This report also discusses education to institutionalize systems within the organization, activities for wider communication and consciousness raising, etc., taking the points of view of both individual ethics and organizational ethics.
