Abstract
In this study, we conducted semi-structured interviews with two teachers engaged in Portuguese language teaching at a Japanese high school. Our aim was to investigate the experiences these teachers have had while teaching Portuguese. Specifically, we sought to understand what the practice of Portuguese language teaching means to these individuals in their roles as educators. The results of the study indicated mutual learning between teachers and students, as well as among peers. It was found that the Japanese native-speaking teacher experienced the teaching of Portuguese as rewarding and enjoyable. In contrast, the Portuguese native-speaking teacher gained increased self-awareness as an educator and underwent a change in her perception of herself as a Brazilian.
