"Art Documentation" covers a variety of visual phenomena produced by various human activities and deals with all processes of the activities concerning information and materials which have been produced by considerations on these visual phenomena. It is also the system of ideas and technologies that support the activities concerning art information and art materials. This "art" means wide coverage of all visual phenomena.
This paper presents a subject of art documentation from the following points of view: (1) how to systematize a number of information and materials that have been produced from various visual phenomena, (2) how to deal with those information and materials, and (3) how to grasp the type of users and to serve them.
My two plans of the system of information and the system of materials in art documentation are brought up in the first step. Next, the working methods of these systems are indicated at every stage of acquisition, organization, retrieval system, and conservation. Last, the actual situation of users, resource centers and databases are traced and the establishment of networking systems are proposed for the comprehensive organization of services.
