Research into tele-medical education has been going on at Toin University of Yokohama for several years. We performed an experiment recently, transmitting a live video of heart surgery from Bad Oeynhausen Heart Center in NRW of Germany to Toin University of Yokohama using ISDN and a video conference system, in September, 2001. Based on the results of the experiment, we performed a second experiment, again transmitting a live video of heart surgery from the Heart Center to multi-locations in Japan: Toin University of Yokohama, and Saitama Medical School, to explore the practical implementation of collaborative tele-medical education. We also evaluated the effect of collaborative tele-medical education by giving a questionnaire to students participating in the experiment. The results of the questionnaire indicated that students have a strong interest in tele-medicine, and that collaborative tele-medical education has a beneficial effect on education both for students in medicine and students in medical engineering.
