Dispersions of Dy2O3 in W, ZrO2 (CaO stabilized) and UO2 were subjected to steep temperature gradient at near melting temperature of the respective matrixes, to determine the compatibility of Dy2O3 with W, ZrO2 and UO2.
The main results obtained are as follows:
(1) Dy2O3 is compatible with W up to 2, 300°C. Physically however the Dy2O3 was found to migrate and agglomerate in the central region, and become one sintered block.
(2) In the case of Dy2O3-ZrO2, the Dy2O3 particles were no longer visible in the central region where the temperature was above 1, 900°C: they had formed a solid solution with ZrO2.
(3) X-ray diffraction analysis applied ro the massive grain region of Dy2O3UO2, where temperature was above 1, 900°C, revealed that Dy2O3 had formed a solid solution with UO2.
