Abstract

X-ray imaging is an essential technique in diagnosis and treatment. Conventionally, techniques such as intraoral dental radiography and panoramic X-rays have been used; however, cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) became available in 1999. By reconstructing image data, CBCT has enabled diagnoses to be made using three-dimensional images. In the present study, a questionnaire survey on CBCT was conducted on members of the Japan Association of Microscopic Dentistry (JAMD). Questionnaires were sent to 1,148 dentists who were full members of the Japan Association of Microscopic Dentistry, and 252 responses were received (response rate, 22.0%). The most common manufacturer of the CBCT machine used was Morita (30.2%), followed by Yoshida (26.2%). The number of dentists starting to use CBCT has been increasing in recent years, and the most common purpose of using CBCT was endodontic treatment (230 dentists), followed by implants (110 dentists). Studies from Turkey and Norway reported that the highest rate of CBCT use was for implant planning. As the participants in the present study were limited to members of the JAMD, care should be taken when generalizing the results to the wider population.
