The objective of this study was to utilize the advantages of text mining analysis to investigate priorities in Japanese oncology nursing research in order to elucidate challenges in oncology nursing. This study targeted Japanese-language literature published between 1972 and June 2017 listed in Igaku Chuo Zasshi (hereinafter “Ichushi”). Text mining techniques were used to analyze characteristic words in all manuscript titles by time period and author affiliation. Searches retrieved a total of 12,030 articles. A total of 77,260 words were extracted from the target text data. In association with cancer control strategies, oncology nursing research themes shifted in the year 2000 or so from treatment and assistance methods to relationships with patients and patients’ wishes. Health care workers differ in their research priorities depending on their occupations. To make progress in research on challenges for meeting the demands of society, it will be necessary to establish environments and systems in which hospital nurses and nursing researchers can engage in research together.
