Effects of electroconvulsive shock (ECS) were studied with respect to latencies of entering the shocked box and amount of defecation in the same apparatus one day after rats received foot shock (FS) in the box. The effects were inversely related to FS-ECS intervals in contrast to no such gradient in defecation which was, however, evidently increased by FS. Relationships between one-trial avoidance responses and the conditioned emotionality (defecation) were discussed.
