Achieving High-Quality Care for Siblings of Children With Life-Threatening Illnesses: Insights for Care Providers

Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to identify elements necessary to achieve high-quality care for siblings of children with life-threatening illnesses, and the barriers to sibling care practice.

Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with care providers who were providing multidisciplinary support for siblings of children with an illness. The data obtained were categorized thorough content analysis.

Results: Thirteen nurses, Child Life Specialists, and childcare workers participated in the study. High-quality care for siblings of children consisted of 11 categories such as “Organization to lead support for siblings”, “Nursing managers’ understanding of support for siblings”, “Staff attitudes toward support for siblings”, “Multidisciplinary collaboration”, “Development of a system for providing support for siblings.”

Conclusions: In addition to providing direct support for siblings from the early stage, it is important to provide consistent support to families.
