Objective: To determine the association between insomnia and sleep hygiene in outpatients with coronary artery disease.
Methods: Outpatients aged ≤75 years with coronary artery disease completed a questionnaire survey on sleep and sleep hygiene. The responses of patients with insomnia and those without insomnia were compared by t-tests and the χ2 test. The factors associated with insomnia were investigated by multivariate logistic regression analysis.
Results: A total of 227 valid responses were obtained. The prevalence of insomnia was 48.6%, and the mean sleep duration was 6.37 ± 1.4 h. Factors associated with insomnia included poor sleep hygiene, perceived sleep deprivation, a disease duration of <1 year, and difficulty sleeping due to chest pain or chest discomfort.
Conclusion: Appropriate sleep hygiene and disease-specific interventions are necessary for insomnia management in patients with coronary artery disease. Further verification is needed regarding the effectiveness of sleep hygiene interventions for insomnia that can be implemented in outpatient settings.
