Abstract

Purpose: To clarify the current status of nursing simulation education based on domestic and overseas literature, with a focus on evaluation of education on nursing practices using simulated patients .

Method: Analyses were based on implementation of simulation education on nursing processes utilizing nursing students as simulated patients, in addition to a review of 60 papers describing the status of education and evaluation of contents. Analyses were performed to examine (A) the purpose of simulation education and (B) perspectives with regard to the purpose. In analysis (A), categorization was performed, and in analysis (B), the contents were reviewed and the subjects were classified, after which the evaluation methods were summarized.

Results: In simulation education, 9 categories covering nursing practice and 3 categories on matters other than nursing practice were extracted. Evaluations of simulation education were divided into 4 classifications: “Evaluations pertaining to nursing practice”, “Evaluations pertaining to learning activities and attitudes of students”, “Evaluations pertaining to educational methods”, and “Others”.

Conclusion: This literature review provided suggestions on how to connect simulation education to improvements in the quality of nursing practice.
