Since the second traffic fatality peak in 1992, the number of fatalities has continued to decline, and in 2010, it was 4,863, less than half of 1992 statistics. This is due to the synergistic effect of various measures such as road maintenance, like refining intersections and creating sidewalks, improvement of vehicle safety, traffic safety education, compulsory wearing of seatbelts, etc. For example, on highways, we pinpoint the most dangerous areas based on traffic accident data, and deploy safety precautions efficiently and effectively.
However, compared to the declining trend of traffic fatalities in total, reduction of traffic fatalities involving the elderly (65 years and over) is slower. In addition to that, the proportion of the accidents occurring on community roads is growing.
Road administration has long been actively involved in traffic safety and creating a barrier-free environment. We have installed effective safety equipment based on the analysis of data, similar to the process used with accumulated traffic accident data. We have also implemented safe driving support services using IT technology and ITS SPOT services. By promoting these comprehensive traffic measures, we are working to achieve a safer and more comfortable society.
