The purpose of this paper is to discuss the acceptance of home economics branch schools during the founding period of high schools under the new system, focusing on Nose Branch School of Osaka Prefectural Engei Senior High School. After World War II, the students of primary schools entered high schools under the new system; in rural areas, they entered branch schools, in which courses were separated based on gender. In Nose area, previous school that was called seinen-gakko educational facility for training youths was abolished, and new school was established. Most girls did not enter the new high school, so many parents, especially fathers, had them take jobs out of the village or practice sewing; few parents thought it was better to provide good education for their daughters. The place of new school was changed, so the distance was extended for many students compared to previous school. Therefore, students did not like the change of school place. In home economics branch schools, students spent many hours sewing; however, some students dropped out to practice sewing in private schools. Because it was very important to master sewing for young women in 1940s, some parents did not approve of the high school’s curriculum. Also, girls and their parents who hope to leave home did not require the education to train famer’s wives. To enter the high school of new system was not necessarily temping for girls and parents in rural area. Therefore, it was difficult for them to accept new school.
