Virtual museums have grown in popularity with the growth of internet penetration around the world. People are now able to enjoy a variety of rare artworks without leaving the comforts of their homes, and in cases learn more from the virtual museum that from actually visiting the original museum in its classic form. The concept of Virtual museums, as a way to preserve historical heritages and promote traditional culture, is widely accepted by internet users. However, the contents of existing Virtual Museums are most likely to be limited to a database of the original museum's artifacts. Furthermore, using pictures and simple 3D models with basic text are the most widely used way of presenting the museum's collections online.
Based on the problems mentioned above, we proposed creating museum collection maps by integrating correlative knowledge with Google Maps, and built a prototype system respectively. Besides adding basic introductions about the collections according to their relevant geographic and time information, we also took advantage of other relevant resources from around the web and integrated them into the system. The correlative knowledge of a certain collection, such as relevant persons, objects or events can be retrieved and provided to users on collection maps so that they are able to understand the history in more depth.
