Abstract
Tao and Mintzberg maintain that a hospital is a professional organization and
that the management of the organization needs control by the same sort of professionals, delegation of power to each professional and expansion of discretion.
However, a study of a hospital course with interviews with the hospital staff reveals that a hospital cannot be managed by what Mintzberg and others have pointed out. It is suggested that the doctor who is the manager of a hospital should be able to motivate the staff. In addition, the study indicates that the hospital staff members tend to perceive hospital as a nonprofit organization and management strategies emphasizing profit making reduce their motivation.
