Quantitative Comparative Analysis of "Companies Driving Regional Growth" by Industry

Abstract

The companies selected by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry to play a central role in regional economies are called "Companies Driving Regional Growth (CDRG)." Since 2017, about 4,700 companies have been selected as "CDRG." For elucidation of the mechanism by which "CDRG" create high added value by taking advantage of regional characteristics, we analyzed patent application data by technical field for the past 20 years for each industry. As a result, it was found that 55.5% of CDRG filed applications, which is much higher than the percentage of Japanese SMEs. It turned out that many of CDRG's companies conduct research and development as a means of creating high added value and apply for patents.
