Morphological changes in aging umbilical veins and ductus venosus were compared to those of ductus arteriosus with the aid of an electron microscope. The venous vasculature were surrounded by more loose connective tissue with abundant capillaries than the ductus arteriousus. The aged ductus venousus had a narrow lumen covered by endothelial cells containing numerous Weibel-Palade bodies, while the lumen of ductus arteriosus was completely closed.
Intimal smooth muscle cell growth was not remarkable in either case, but degeneration of medial smooth muscle cells was marked in ductus venosus. It was suggested that alteration of the vessel wall was related to the structural and functional differences between veins and arteries.
