This research focused on sexing and aging of the Yellow-throated Bunting Emberiza elegans. Research was implemented along with banding operations in Hiroshima Prefecture during the winters of 1987 through 1992. Sexing from plumage proved relatively easy, except for a few females with black feathers on the face and breast. The following techniques for aging were identified:
-MALES Compared to adult males, juvenile males in first winter plumage have more prominent buff tips on black feathers of crown, ear coverts and breasts.
-FEMALES Tips of median and greater coverts are conspicuously whiter for adult females; whereas juvenile females in first winter plumage are darker all over.
-BOTH SEXES Tips of tail are round and not worn in adults, pointed and worn in first winter plumage juveniles.
-BOTH SEXES Tips of primary coverts are round and without buff edges in adults, pointe and with buff edges in first winter plumage juveniles.
