Semiconductor microspheres have attracted interest for optical microcavity applications, such as lasers and sensors. We have succeeded in fabricating zinc oxide microsphere by laser ablation in the air and demonstrated UV whispering gallery mode lasing from an optically-pumped microsphere. However, fabricated microspheres cannot be controlled in size and generated position is random. In this research, time resolved observation of droplets formation was performed using a high-speed camera during laser ablation with an optical vortex beam for size control and on-demand synthesis of microspheres.
