Zinc oxide (ZnO) , a Ⅱ-Ⅵ semiconductor, has a wide band gap (3.37 eV) and a large excition binding energy (60 meV). Therefore, ZnO is expected as ultraviolet (UV) light emitting diodes and UV lasers. We have succeeded in fabricating ZnO microspheres by laser ablation method in air, and observed UV whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) lasing from the microspheres. In this research, we achieved alloyed ZnO with MgO by this method using a MgO containing ZnO target. The band gap increased with Mg content and blueshift of UV WGM lasing peaks was demonstrated from the ZnMgO microsphre.
