We have already proposed a magic-T based planar balun and its application to a variable phase shift balun and variable attenuation balun. The proposed planar balun consists of a planar magic-T and a quarter-wavelength microstrip line only. In this paper, performance change when shortening the microstrip line in the magic-T is discussed with electromagnetic simulation to minimize the circuit size of the balun. Better than 2-dB insertion loss and 10-dB return loss were obtained from 4 to 6 GHz with smaller configuration.
