The use of non-first-person pronouns in self-talk may improve athletic performance and mental health. However, further knowledge of non-first-person pronouns in self-talk is required to apply it to coaching practices. This study aimed to clarify the effect of non-first-person self-talk during the competition season on subjective athletic performance and other psychological indicators in university tennis players by conducting a single-case experimental design intervention. The participants were two university tennis players who were currently engaged in athletic careers. Baseline and intervention periods were each set up for approximately one month. The players were taught how to replace first-person with non-first-person pronouns during the intervention. They were also asked to implement non-first-person self-talk before their matches and in other situations. The effects of the intervention on subjective athletic performance and other indicators were confirmed in one player. The other player, who demonstrated a decline in promotion focus on the regulatory focus, showed ambiguous changes in outcome indicators. Although further investigation is needed, non-first-person self-talk may relate to both athletic performance and mental health in athletic careers.
