Fracture of the Trapezium is relatively rare. It is reported to account for 3.5-5% of all fractures of the carpal bones. We have experienced to treat 5 cases of fracture dislocation of the carpometacarpal joint, accompanied with vertical type fracture of the trapezium. The treatment was open reduction and Kirschner wire fixation in every case.
Clinical results in 3 cases of the trapezium fracture alone were exellent. However, the result of two elderly women with trapezium fracture accompanied by Bennett's fracture dislocation were unsatisfactory, because they had pain, restricted range of motion and arthritic changes on X-ray films.
