A kaolinite-4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) intercalation compound was prepared for the first time. In addition to the galley height with 0.70 nm, the intercalated DMAP, whose methyl groups were in one environment, was hydrogen-bonded to interlayer hydroxyl groups of kaolinite. These results indicated that the orientation of intercalated DMAP was mostly perpendicular to kaolinite layers.
