This study aimed to evaluate whether the shape of orthodontic wire affects the magnitude and inclination of tooth movement using data from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and intraoral scans of the dental arch. The canine root shape obtained from CBCT performed at the first visit was superimposed on the dental arch data extracted through an intraoral scanner on subsequent visits and tooth (crown and root) movement over time was measured. We found that using round wires resulted in a greater magnitude of movement than using rectangular wires. However, the root apex moved slower than the crown and in lesser magnitude. Therefore, using round wires may results in a greater coronal tooth movement, whereas using rectangular wires could help avoid tipping.
