A few phthalate derivatives as hormone-disrupting chemicals in plasticizers were questioned, and these have been investigated by Japanese government ministries. Evaluation results for three chemical groups (nonylphenol, nonylphenolethoxylate,bis-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate (DEHP), and bispenol A) were focused in terms of risk management. Moreover, it is thought that cultivated food and natural medicines are influenced by the presence of these substances in soil. We performed quantitative analysis of 8 types of phthalate derivatives with respect to the extraction of 17 natural medicines from agricultural sources by HPLC. The result showed that some phthalates were detected in 15 natural medicines. In the case of DEHP, which is the most common plasticizer in Japan, very small amounts of phthalates were detected in PAEONIAE RADIX (syakuyaku).
