The blood level of chloramphenicol in horses was determined serially after oral administration of chloramphenicol and its palmitate, and after Intramuscular injection of chloramphenicol and its succinate. It was maintained above a level of 5μg/ml for 8 hours after oral administration. Intramuscular administration of chloramphenicol failed to make the blood level of the antibiotic attain 5μg/ml. Hyaluronidase was not effective to increase blood level. Intramuscular administration of chloramphenicol succinate, as well as oral administration of chloramphenicol, was so effective as to show a maximum level of 30μg/ml in 1 hour and maintain such a high blood level for a while.
