Equine sarcoids from 31 horses were examined histopathologically. The sarcoid nodules were various in size and classified into three types, verrucous, fibroblastic, and both mixed on the basis of the histological appearance. The epidermis was hyperkeratotic, parakeratotic, acanthotic, and frequently ulcerated. Rete pegs projected deeply into the sarcoid lesion were also found. Fibroblasts were proliferated in a picket fence pattern at epidermo-dermal junction (EDJ). Atypical fibroblasts were observed frequently, especially remarkable at EDJ. Fibro blasts were infiltrated into the subcutaneous tissue, and iito the muscular layer in 2 cases. Myofibroblast-like cells as well as mature fibroblasts were observed in a case examined electron microscopically.
