能装束についての一考察

In view of the importance of Noh costumes in making the dramatic effect of the Noh play as a stage drama, we have made a study of colors and patterns of the Noh costumes.
The composition of the Noh play, the classifications of the Noh music and the dyeing, colors and patterns of the costumes have been studied through the literatures and pictures. Also we have made inquiries into the Noh costumes in the Tokugawa Art Gallery and how the Noh play was performed in the Tokugawa period.
Our research has revealed that the costumes in the Tokugawa Art Gallery have mainly red, yellowish red, yellow, blue and purple colors, and the patterns are generally fixed by the nature of the part in the way that they harmonize well with the contents of the plays ; and that Marumon, one of the patterns, is still seen on women's obi (sash); thus it can be said that designs of Noh costumes are in use on the ordinary Japanese kimono even today.
