1. The purpose :
The purpose of this work is to trace how the family crests were first used on Japanese common people's clothing.
2. The method :
A questionnaire was administered to 4, 000 housewives in the whole city of Kurayoshi in Tottori Prefecture. Also collected clothes were studied.
3. The results :
There were 206 kinds of family crests. Usually wedding dresses, beddings, cloth wrappers (Furoshiki as we call), hoods, small crape wrappers, umbrellas and so on are marked with the family crests. On the occasion of the wedding, the bride takes these things with her crest to the bridegroom's house. More crests are dyed rather than woven. A large variety of designs, patterns and sizes is found according to the kind of clothes.
