Abstract
The aim of this study is to obtain information as to the wives' understanding of the artificial termination of pregnancy which is legitimate only on the basis of the Eugenic Protection Law.
Most wives whose husbands were government officials or businessmen and wives who had received higher school education had the proper understanding, while only 50% of wives of farmers and fishermen had the proper understanding.
The number of wives who were subjected to and not subjected to artificial termination, was 57% and 43%, respectively. Their reasons of termination were : medical reasons 37%, domestic reasons 43% and others 20%. Medical reasons were found most frequently in agricultural area “D” of Asakura-cho, and domestic reasons in “A” Danchi in Fukuoka-city, both reaching 60%.
