Abstract
As the basis of making clothing we have studied the somatotypes by direct measurement of bodies or by photographs. Although the latter is complementary method to the former, when we use only a photograph, it is necessary to calculate the girth of the parts which cannot be projected on a plain. In the present paper we studied the accuracy of the estimation of the girth from the actual measurement of the width and depth of bust, waist and hip.
The subjects are 200 girl students, about 20 years old. The measurement was carried out in 1964. Nine items were studied including the girth, width and depth of bust, waist and hip. We grouped 200 girls into three classes according to the width-depth index, and compared two methods; Method-I used the width and depth to estimate the girth and Method-II used the “width plus depth.”
The results are as follows;
(1) The classification by width-depth index dose not improve the accuracy.
(2) The estimation by Method-I is almost as accurate as Method-II.
(3) If we allow ±-.2 cm deviation for the bust girth, +1.5 cm for the waist girth and±2cm for the hip girth, the estimation by Method-I covers 86% ot the subjects in number forb. g., 87% for w. g., and 93% for h. g.
