The effect of cationic surfactant, benzylhexadecyldimethylammonium chloride (BHDAC), on dyeing properties of formalized, and acid-treated formalized PVA fibers with monoazo acid dye, Kayaku Roccelline (C.I. Acid Red 88), have been studied. Dyeing conditions were chosen as follows : liquor ratio 1 : 1, 500 with 1 × 10-3 mol/l of dye and with 0.1 mol/l of sodium chloride at 80°C. The concentration of cationic surfactant was varied in the range of 1 × 10-7 to 1 × 10-2 mol/l.
The uptake of dye to formalized and acid-treated formalized PVA fibers increased gradually with an increase in BHDAC concentration and, after passing a maximum, the value decreased. The equilibrium sorption of dye (C) increased markedly with an increase in degree of formalization of the fiber in the presence of BHDAC. C values in the presence of BHDAC were fairly larger than those in the absence of it. The apparent diffusion coefficients (D) decreased rapidly with an increase in degree of formalization of the fiber. D values in the presence of BHDAC were considerably smaller than those in the absence of it. C and D values for acid-treated formalized fibers were larger than those for formalized fibers.
It is suggested that the dyeing properties of PVA fibers with monoazo acid dye are remarkably affected by the cationic surfactant concentration, by the degree of formalization of the fiber, and by the cross-linking formed in the formalization reaction of the polymer.
